Future of the Future

When my friend Dick Jefferson and his pal Ryan Smith were brutally attacked in St. Martin, there were several vague reports that Ryan had suffered "brain damage" that had me fearing the worst. I don't even know the guy, but you'd have to be -- well, you'd have to be a cowardly asshole on St. Martin with a tire iron not to care about the well-being of a bright 25-year-old man who'd been attacked for no reason.

But Now out of Miami comes word that there appears to be cause for celebration as Ryan is making a slow but steady recovery. The Miami Herald has a nice piece about him that says his doctors believe he will eventually make a full recovery. Speech and writing -- Ryan's bread and butter -- remain the biggest challenge for him right now, but he is undergoing weeks of therapy for both.

The article also gives an update on the whole investigation, but Dutch territories seem to have a revolving-door arrest system, so the part about "two new arrests" in the attack doesn't impress me one bit.

Dick didn't call me for tennis today, so I'm wondering if he's been released by his doctors to return to normal activities. Link to the article below -- and we're rooting for ya, Ryan!
