Page 1 Consider (08/21)

  • On Second Thought: We went to see "Trust the Man" over the weekend, a New York film about the ups and downs of two couples (Julianne Moore-David Duchovny and Maggie Gyllenhaal-Billy Crudup). I thought it was pretty good (Billy Crudup is adorable and it was filmed all around my neighborhood and at several of my favorite haunts), until I read Manohla Dargis' review. Ouch. (NYT)

  • It's Hard Out There for a Jock: Poor Marion Jones. Another athlete who was "framed" in a doping scandal. Funny that Justin Gatlin -- who used to have the same coach as Jones -- is claiming the same frame-up. (Guardian)

  • Just Smile: In a blink, Matt Leinart has gone from USC golden boy to uneasy savior of the Arizona Cardinals. “College doesn’t matter anymore,” he says. “The NFL, it’s tough.” (NYT)

  • Uncut and Uncensored: The gay porn star Michael Lucas is planning a trip to Israel to entertain the troops. (PinkNews)

  • A Place in the Sun: Where was this organization for gay and lesbian youths when I was growing up in Phoenix in the 1980s? (Advocate)

  • Pray for that Topspin: The Times' PLAY magazine examines Roger Federer as a religious experience. (PLAY)

  • Cooking With Equality: A cook who claims he was fired from a fancy Westchester, N.Y., restaurant when coworkers discovered he is a biological woman is protected by the state's human rights law, a judge has ruled. State supreme court justice Joan Lefkowitz held that although discrimination against a transgender person is not specifically listed in the law -- which does mention racial, religious, and sexual discrimination -- it is covered nonetheless. (Advocate)

  • She's Still Standing: This is the best interview I've read with Martina Hingis since her comeback. "Sometimes in tennis it’s about the last one standing." (NYT)
  • Speaking of Which: It seems women's tennis has yet another star in the making: Ana Ivanovic, 18, of Serbia advanced to the final of the Rogers Cup with a rain-interrupted 6-1, 6-4 victory over Dinara Safina of Russia on Sunday, and looks like she has the goods. She'll play a resurgent Martina Hingis -- weather permitting -- today. (LFP)
