About a (Straight) Boy

The Advocate catches up with the actor Derek Magyar, who stars as a sex pro who can't help falling in love in the new gay flick "Boy Culture." As disappointing as it is that there's A. yet another cute boy on the cover who turns out to be straight; and B. yet another straight boy playing gay in a gay movie, the film does have a lot going for it since it is directed by Q. Allan Brocka, the man behind the "Eating Out" films, and is based on the acclaimed 1995 novel Matthew Rettenmund. I see it's coming to the Quad soon, and with descriptions like "A successful male escort describes in a series of confessions his tangled romantic relationships with his two roommates and an older, enigmatic male client" and a tagline that reads: "Sex pays, love costs," I will go ahead and admit it, I'm intrigued.

I saw the movie. It's quite good. Well worth seeing. Actually, two of the three stars are straight in real life. And watch for Darryl "Noah's Arc" Stephens. He is the polar opposite of Noah in this role. I guess that means he's a good actor.

This movie was very good with many little twists. As much as I wanted the main characters just to fuck and get it over with they had you intrigued as to what the other will say next to mess it up. Entirely a well worth watch.

Accidently ordered Boy Culture thinking it was something else. What a great surprise. Not a "great" movie, but definitely a movie well worth watching. I fell in love with X (Derek Magyar), and actually felt his pain/confusion. Darryl Stephens character was quite a nice surprise of his acting capabilities (talk about a character switch from his character in Noah's Arc). The only disapointment was the characters and acting of his parents, sister, x-fiance and her brother. Yet a great touching story with so much sex in theory (count the pennies in the jar :) Give it a 9 (out of 10).
