Sunday Styles

A classic 1979 portrait of Richard Gere by Herb Ritts, above left . Still a "cover man" at 56, right.
Two scenes from his breakthrough film, "American Gigolo" (1980).
Walking in New York circa 1983, left. In "An Officer and a Gentleman" from 1982, right.
The New York Times Style Magazine catches up with (212) favorite Richard Gere in this Sunday's issue devoted to men's fashion. He may not have been the producers' first pick for "American Gigolo" -- that would be John Travolta(!) -- but Gere's sex-soaked portrayal of the stud-for-hire Julian Kaye certainly left a lifelong impression on me. Also, look for the nice homage to the late fashion photog Herb Ritts. If anyone embodied the neo-Hellenism that is muscling its way back into the fashion arena, it was Ritts. (NYT)
